The Foreign Service Officer Exam (FSOT) is administered by the United States Foreign Service to those seeking employment as a Foreign Service Officer. There are three multiple-choice sections of around 60 questions each and one essay. Applicants must display knowledge of the FSO position, history of the U.S., and English grammar, as well as the following general knowledge areas:

  • Communication
  • Computers
  • Economics
  • Management
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • United States Government, Society, and Culture
  • World History and Geography

Applicants are given 45 minutes to complete each section. Test takers must obtain a minimum combined score of 154 on the multiple-choice section and a 6 out of 12 on the essay.

Applicants can register for the exam during the three annual testing windows, and those taking it must be U.S. citizens over the age of 20. Applicants may take the test as many times as they choose, but must wait a calendar year before a retest. It is offered only in computerized form.
